WORLD PHOTO DAY?
World Photo Day is an
international photography event on August 19th that celebrates
the passion for photography in our communities.
In a world where
millions of pictures are uploaded every minute, World Photo Day is inspiring
thousands of photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a
simple purpose: to share their world with the world.
From everyday life to
incredible landscapes, our global gallery is an evolving mosaic of images
captured by photographers of all skills levels living in a diverse range of
countries and cultures.
No matter who you are,
where you are or what equipment and skills you have, World Photo Day can help
open your eyes to the possibilities of photography, and enable you show us the
world as you see it.
“In honour of World Photo Day, I sat down to
write a list of reasons to celebrate photography. How ironic that my top five
list largely related to human connections and not to the landscapes I love to
photograph. Without intending it that way, my list evolved to be entirely in
keeping with the rationale behind World Photo Day – a celebration of the
ability we have to communicate through this medium and to unite local and
global communities with the power of photography.” LOUISE LAW said.

WORLD PHOTO DAY
How did we decide when
we should host World Photo Day?
The date behind World
Photo Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic
processes developed by Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre in 1837. On
January 9, 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the daguerreotype
process. A few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government
purchased the patent and announced the invention as a gift "Free to the
World".
It should be noted
that the Daguerreotype wasn't the first permanent photographic image. In 1826,
Nicèphore Nièpce captured the earliest known permanent photograph known as 'View
from the Window at Le Gras' using a process called Heliography.
August 19th, 1839 was
chosen as the date behind World Photo Day based on the following historical
merits:
- The Daguerreotype as
the first practical photographic process.
- The purchase and release of the patent by the French government.
- The purchase and release of the patent by the French government.

Turning an idea into a
globally celebrated photography event
Every big project
starts with an idea. Turning that idea into reality is almost always harder
than it looks. The World Photo Day project started in 2009 and it was
celebrated for the first time on August 19th, 2010. We've come along a long way
since those early days and we're always working on new opportunities and ideas.
We started with a very
amateur and simple first website. Our user registration system didn't work very
well and we didn't have a password reset feature for our first 2 years. With
help from good friends, World Photo Day Founder, Korske Ara spent hours of his
spare time learning the skills needed to build a website that could support a
global gallery.
Today, millions of
people around the world are reached by our efforts to celebrate photography and
thousands of photographers are getting involved through independent community
events, competitions and promotions.

ខែសីហាឆ្នាំ 2010 យើងបានមកនៅតាមរយៈពេលដ៏វែងឆ្ងាយចាប់តាំងពីថ្ងៃដំបូងនោះហើយយើងតែងតែកំពុងធ្វើការលើឱកាសនិងគំនិតថ្មីនោះ។
